Keith Rosson is an author, painter, illustrator, and graphic designer living in Portland, Oregon. Effluvia, Expectorate, Etcetera is a gathering of selected paintings and illustrations that spans nearly two decades of work. The B-sides. The songs rarely heard. The tucked-away gems. Winged, mustachioed pickles lament the dismantling of kindness in the world. Fields of rabbits wear gasmasks, germsuits. Lucy and Charlie Brown lament human frailty. Fathers and sons play catch with human skulls. A Roman gladiator's galea floats surrounded by stacks of bloodied intestines and the premonition, "We're all fucked."
With a heavy nod to comic book culture and a cut-and-paste punk aesthetic, the paintings and illustrations here are simultaneously droll and incendiary; emotional appeals strained through a colander of pop culture icons and wryly cynical anthropomorphism. An attempt to tackle universal, even heavy-handed themes with a dark, tongue-in-cheek gallows humor.
Rosson is also the author of two books: the anthology The Best of Intentions, which gathers the first sixteen issues of his long-running punk/personal zine Avow, and The Mercy of the Tide, an alternate history/horror novel of which NPR's Jason Heller said was "one of the most immersive fictional settings in recent memory," claiming that "Rosson is a talent to be watched."
His newest novel, Smoke City, will be published in January of 2018, and he continues to draw pictures of shark-men punching out werewolves, and foxes howling atop mounds of skulls. It's a living.
